El primer Mundial paralímpico conjunto de deportes de nieve (esquí alpino, biatlón, esquí de fondo y snowboard), programado originalmente del 7 al 20 de febrero de 2021 en Lillehammer (Noruega), se celebrará a principios de enero de 2022.
El motivo del aplazamiento, tomado por la junta de la Asociación Noruega de Esquí, en consulta también con el Comité Olímpico y Paralímpico de Noruega, se debe a las consecuencias derivadas de la pandemia global de la COVID-19.
«Sabemos cuánto significa el evento para muchos y entendemos la decepción de tener que esperar todo un año, pero el alcance, la duración y la complejidad del campeonato no pueden acomodarse a la situación actual de la pandemia a nivel nacional e internacional», declaró Erik Roste, presidente de la Asociación Noruega de Esquí.
El Mundial reprogramado conservará el nombre de Lillehammer 2021 y será el mayor evento de deporte paralímpico en Noruega desde los Juegos de Invierno, también en Lillehammer, de 1994.
Según el IPC, el campeonato, para el que aún no hay fecha concreta en enero de 2022, recibirá a 750 participantes de más de treinta países y 700 voluntarios.
Este Mundial será la antesala a la gran cita de deportes de nieve del movimiento paralímpico internacional, los Juegos de Pekín (China) entre el 4 y el 13 de marzo.
