Un año después de lo previsto debido a su aplazamiento por la pandemia de la COVID-19, la ciudad noruega de Lillehammer acoge los Mundiales paralímpicos de deportes de nieve (8-23 enero) más globales, con representantes de treinta países, entre ellos España, que contará con el esquiador Pol Makuri y los riders de snowboard Víctor González e Irati Idiakez.
El barcelonés Pol Makuri, referente español del esquí de fondo y perteneciente a la Federación Española de Deportes de Personas con Parálisis Cerebral y Daño Cerebral Adquirido (FEDPC), lleva una década compitiendo en pruebas internacionales.
Makuri, que acudirá a los Juegos Paralímpicos de Pekín, lleva una temporada de trabajo exhaustivo con más de mil kilómetros en las piernas de entrenamientos y acude a Noruega con buenas sensaciones para pelear por meterse entre los mejores.
Una de las candidatas a subirse al podium es Irati Idiakez. La deportista de Getaria, que compite sin el brazo derecho debido a un accidente, se llevó el Globo de Cristal a la mejor deportista de su categoría (SB-UL) la pasada campaña.
Esta campaña, bajo la dirección de su entrenador, Manel Maestre, y el trabajo que realiza en el Centro de Deportes de Invierno Adaptado (CDIA) del Valle de Arán, de momento no se ha bajado del podio. En Laandgraf (Países Bajos) ganó una medalla de plata, mismo metal que en Finlandia, y en la última prueba de la Copa del Mundo en Hochfügen (Austria) se proclamó campeona
El tercer español en competición es Víctor González, que padece una invasión medular del treinta por ciento. El rider asturiano ya estuvo en los Juegos Paralímpicos de PyeongChang en 2018 y en unas semanas también lo hará, si no hay imprevistos, en Pekín.
ESTRELLAS INTERNACIONALES
Entre los participantes internacionales destaca el canadiense Brian McKeever, campeón paralímpico en trece ocasiones y que, a sus 42 años, disputará su último Mundial en la categoría de esquí de fondo de discapacitados visuales.
La francesa Marie Bochet, que arrasó en el Mundial de esquí alpino en 2019, llega a la cita tras cosechar recientemente su victoria número cien en pruebas de la Copa del Mundo. Fuera de las pistas, la deportista gala se dedica a tejer gorros para recaudar fondos para ayudar a los niños a practicar deportes adaptados.
La neerlandesa Lisa Bunschoten, mejor deportista de snowboard de la clase femenina SB-LL2 de discapacitados físicos al no tener pierna izquierda, se proclamó doble campeona mundial en 2019. Muchas de sus victorias las celebra junto a su pareja, Chris Vos, cuádruple campeón del mundo en la clase SB-LL1 masculina.
La estadounidense Oksana Masters, una de las mejores deportistas con discapacidad de la historia, llega a Lillehammer para participar en biatlón solo cuatro meses después de ganar dos medallas de oro en ciclismo paralímpico en los Juegos de Tokio. Anteriormente, en Juegos de invierno, también se subió al podium en esquí de fondo y biatlón.
SEDE OLÍMPICA Y PARALÍMPICA EN 1994
Lillehammer acoge por primera vez en la historia un Mundial de deportes de nieve paralímpico en las modalidades de esquí alpino, esquí de fondo, snowboard y biatlón. Anteriormente estos Mundiales se habían celebrado en el mismo año, pero en diferentes lugares según el deporte.
La ciudad noruega ya tiene experiencia en este tipo de eventos puesto que acogió los Juegos Olímpicos y Paralímpicos de invierno en 1994, así como varios Juegos X, Copas del Mundo de snowboard y Copas Mundiales FIS.
Las competiciones de esquí de fondo y biatlón se celebrarán en Lillehammer, mientras que las de esquí alpino y snowboard serán en el complejo montañoso de Hafjell, a quince kilómetros.
En total, se pondrán en juego 82 medallas entre todas las disciplinas, con la participación de más de quinientos deportistas de treinta países.
