La primera medalla de oro en la historia del snowboard español llegó en la prueba de dual banked slalom (dos circuitos paralelos con obstáculos en los que dos deportistas bajan de forma simultánea). Irati Idiakez consiguió meterse en la gran final de la clase SB-UL para deportistas con discapacidad, en la que derrotó a la estadounidense Peggy Martin.
Unos días antes, la guipuzcoana de 27 años ya había pisado el podio para recoger la plata en la prueba de cross, en la que los riders compiten en grupos de cuatro a través de un trazado con subidas, bajadas y saltos. Idiakez solo fue superada en meta por la polaca Monika Kotzian, mientras que el bronce fue para la estadounidense Darian Haynes.
La otra medalla de oro la conquistaron en el boarder cross por equipos Irati Idiakez y la leonesa Raquel Martínez, la primera española con parálisis cerebral que alcanza un Campeonato del Mundo. En esta competición, cada equipo está compuesto por dos corredores y cuando el primero de ellos cruza la línea de meta, el tiempo de ventaja marcado se transfiere al segundo participante del combinado.
La pareja española se impuso en meta a las polacas Monika Kotzian y Natalia Siuba-Jarosz (plata) y a las estadounidenses Darian Haynes y Rebecca Johnston (bronce). Aunque Martínez cruzó la meta por detrás de la participante polaca, Idiakez pudo remontar para colocar a España en lo más alto del podio. «Me hace mucha ilusión ganar un oro con Raquel. Las sensaciones han sido muy buenas», dijo Irati al término de la carrera.
En la prueba por equipos de dual banked slalom, que puso punto final a este primer Mundial organizado con la modalidad paralímpica ya integrada en la estructura de la Federación Internacional de Esquí y Snowboard (FIS), las españolas finalizaron en cuarta posición, tras ser derrotadas por Polonia primero y por Estados Unidos después. Raquel Martínez compitió además en los dos eventos individuales de la clase SB-LL1 para riders con mayor afectación en las piernas, con dos séptimas plazas.
En La Molina también participó otro representante de la Federación Española de Deportes de Personas con Discapacidad Física (FEDDF), el toledano Emilio Redondo, que concluyó 12º en cross de la clase SB-LL2 para deportistas con menor discapacidad en las piernas.
La celebración de este Mundial, que tuvo que aplazarse de enero a marzo por la falta de nieve, fue posible gracias al apoyo de Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC).
